At just 19 years of age, Enescu rose to the level of Mendelssohn with his Octet, a true masterpiece of great formal complexity. Nine cleverly arranged themes emerge from this monumental structure. The composer’s stated aim was that the four movements of the work succeed each another in such a way as to create the first movement of a symphony – in other words, one gigantic sonata form.
