J. Haydn: String Quartet No. 1,  in G major, Hob. III:75, “Erdody”
I. Allegro con spirito
II. Adagio sostenuto
III. Minuet. Presto – Trio
IV. Finale. Allegro ma non troppo

A. Dvořák: String Quartet No. 13, in G major, op. 106
I. Allegro moderato
II. Adagio ma non troppo
III. Molto vivace — Un poco più mosso
IV. Finale. Andante sostenuto — Allegro con fuoco

These two quartets are major works which draw their strength from the maturity reached by their respective composers. On his return from London, Haydn applied 40 years of experience in writing quartets to op. 76. A century later, Dvořák had just returned from the United States and was entering the final phase of his career when he wrote op. 106. It reveals his absolute mastery of compositional techniques and foreshadows the expressive poetic style of his later symphonic poems.
