L. van Beethoven:
Sonata No. 30, in E major, for solo piano, op. 109

Sonata No. 31, in A-flat major, for solo piano, op. 110

Sonata No. 32, in c minor, for solo piano, op. 111

Before starting the project for his 9th Symphony, between 1819 and 1822 Beethoven composed his three last sonatas (nr. 30 to 32), which are among the most intimate testimonies of the Beethovenian genius, in the same way as the Mary Magdalene of Donatello. Both the lyrical depth of the first movement of the 31st sonata as the variation rhythms of the 32nd form examples with which Beethoven succeeds in expressing his individuality. Lenz writes in 1852 about the latter: ‘those variations will one day be understood, but we doubt whether they will ever become beautiful and whether those rhythmic innovations are destined to play a prominent role’.
The 20th century will prove the opposite…
