Louis Lortie, piano
L. van Beethoven:
Sonata No. 19, in g minor, for solo piano, op. 49, No. 1

Sonata No. 20, in G major, for solo piano, op. 49, No. 2

Sonata No. 29, in B-flat major, for solo piano, op. 106, “Hammerklavier”

Although published in 1805, the two sonatas of opus 49, composed in 1796 and 1798, bear witness to Beethoven’s first Viennese years. Often entitled ‘Leichte Sonaten‘ those works were certainly composed by Beethoven for his pupils.
On the other hand the Hammerklavier sonata – composed in 1820 – was nicknamed ‘Grosse Sonate‘ by the author, a qualification that refers to both its size and its complexity. Beethoven would have proclaimed to his publisher: ‘Herewith a sonata on which pianists will still struggle in fifty years’.
