The boundary between sacred and profane in music is sometimes porous, even for purely instrumental works.
In Bach and Mendelssohn’s works, certain melodies are crossed by a fervent breath which transforms them into prayer. This is the case of the Adagio of Mendelssohn’s second Cello Sonata, which skilfully combines the aesthetics of the chorale and the recitative aesthetic. The cello loses itself in a meditative song carried by the arpeggios religiously ginned by the piano.
