The preludes that introduce the six suites are remarkably diversified in their style and architecture. The fourth is full of technical difficulties while offering cadential passages where great freedom of play can be deployed. Doubts persist about the precise instrument for which Bach wrote his famous suites for. The Suite No. 5 requires a scordatura (the fourth string must be tuned a tone lower than normal), and was transcribed for lute by Bach himself. The destination of Suite No. 6 is also complex because, being more acute than the other five, it seems to have been conceived for a
a five-string piccolo cello.
