In 1825, the first printed edition of Bach’s Six Sonatas or Studies for solo cello. If the term “studies” is used for commercial and pedagogical purposes, it does not reflect the giant step the giant leap that these works made a century earlier in the history of the cello, still competing with the viola da gamba.
The Suites explore with virtuosity all the instrument’s registers displaying its expressive potential and even creating the illusion of polyphonic counterpoint.
