Recognised as one of the fathers of the minimalist movement, Steve Reich derived the principle of phase shifting from his early experiments on magnetic tape, which he then applied to instruments. Dynamic and relentless, based on the repetition of melodic and rhythmic motifs, his music seems to reflect the frenetic urban pulse. It also draws on the sources of traditional Ghanaian, Balinese and Hebrew music, while maintaining the framework and rigour of the scholarly construction.
