F. Mendelssohn : Piano Quartet No. 1, in C minor, op.1, MWV. Q 11
I. Allegro vivace
II. Adagio
III. Scherzo
IV. Allegro moderato
Mendelssohn took a bold approach to chamber music, the keyboard quartet having been
less popular than the string quartet by his predecessors. The classical heritage is still perceptible in the clarity of the work’s structures, its light textures and the “gallant” figurations of the piano, but this piece already reveals an absolute control of
structures, a perfect mastery of the modulations, and a skill to paint the depth of the emotion.
