After a degree in Economic Sciences at the Free University of Brussels, Bernard de Launoit became known in the field of the arts in 1989, when he started as an assistant at Muhka (Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art), and then joined the Galerie Isy Brachot in Brussels and Paris, specialising in Belgian surrealist painting. In 1994 he became Managing Director of Christie’s Belgium, continuing there until 1999.
From that point on, his life has been divided between Brussels and Paris, in various cultural fields. He joined the Orchestre des Champs Elysées of Philippe Herreweghe and also became a consultant in cultural matters, notably for the “Magritte and Photography” exhibition which opened at the PBA in 2005 and for the Maison Européenne de la Photographie of Paris in 2006. He is one of the founders and Vice President of the Magritte Foundation, a partner of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and Suez in the creation of the Magritte Museum which opened in June 2009.
Bernard de Launoit is a producer of documentaries through two production companies which he co-founded: Alizé Production in Brussels and Arctic Productions in Paris. In this framework, he has produced around fifty documentaries over the past 15 years in the areas of culture and exploration, including the largest filmed expedition to Everest on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first ascension in 2003. In the context of his activities filming expeditions he became in January 2006 one of the owners of the Belgian “Exploration of the World” organisation for film-lectures.
A music lover by nature, he devotes a large part of his time and provides his support and knowledge to various cultural institutions such as the Brussels Philharmonic Society, and the Ars Musica Festival. He is currently President of the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia and of the Music Fund association. He is a classical concert producer. He co-produced, on 2 July 2010, the inaugural concert on the occasion of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union. He is the co-president and artistic director of the “Musicales de Beloeil”, one of the most popular outdoor classical Music event in Belgium.
Bernard de Launoit has been an essential participant in the renovation of the Queen Elisabeth Musical Chapel since 2004; he is currently President of the Executive Committee. 2015 is an important moment in the history of this music training center with the opening of a new building including a little concert hall, music studios and new residency studios.
