Alain Garichot, stage director

Thanks to his training in theatre and music, and 12 years spent at the Comédie Française under the direction of Pierre Dux as a stage manager and assistant director, Alain Garichot had the opportunity to refine his actor-directing skills in exceptional conditions.

He was professor of performance and stage at the Ecole d’Art Lyrique of the Paris Opera from 1982 to 1995, where he directed Debussy’s La Chute de la Maison Usher, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and L’Heure Espagnole in the Salle Favart, Goldoni et ses musiciens at the amphitheater of Opéra-Bastille, and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites at the Palais Garnier in 1994.

At the request of many French and foreign operas, Alain Garichot directed a large number of opera works, including Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Verdi’s Falstaff, Puccini’s Tosca and Madama Butterfly, Messager’s Véronique, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Manon of Massenet with Nathalie Dessay, Maria Stuarda with Joyce di Donato at l’Opera de Genève, Guy Ropartz’s Le Pays in Tours, and  Bérénice de Magnard which won the Claude Rostand Prize awarded by the Syndicat de la Critique. Next to his career as a director, Alain Garichot gives masterclasses at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Lyon, in Lausanne, at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Geneva and Neuchâtel, and at the Kansai Institute of Kyoto. In 1990, he was also mandated by the organization “Managers, Passez la Rampe” to train consultants and lead seminars geared towards company directors.

He has been Stage Director at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium since 2007.
